Last playoff position between Ginebra and Phoenix Super LPG

On Thursday evening, Barangay Ginebra received new lease for life, thanks to NorthPort Batang Pier.

NorthPort’s enormous 122-94 victory over the Alaskan Aces maintained the Gin Kings in quest for eighth and final places for the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.

Had the Aces won their final round elimination, Alaska, Ginebra, Phoenix Super LPG and TerraFirma would have had a four times tie in 4-7. Phoenix and TerraFirma would have fought for eighth place thanks to their stronger quotients.

Rather, Alaska dropped to 3-8 and TerraFirma ended up with a lower quotient in a triple bond with Gin Kings and the Fuel Masters.

Ginebra will take over Phoenix Super LPG in a playoff on Saturday for the eighth place.

The Gin Kings, the Philippine defending champions, will still be on the back of the wall since there is no doubt that they will be in full power on Saturday. On Thursday Ginebra played against Meralco without Scottie Thumpson (protocol on health and safety) and Japeth Aguilar (knee). The loss was absorbed by 79-66, putting them at risk of playoffs being missing.

For his part, Phoenix has not been playing since 110-80 September, when it was rocked by San Miguel Beer.

In the single elimination round match between Ginebra and Phoenix, the Gin Kings won 94-87 after they caught up with a 19-point deficit.

The playoff winner will be playing TNT at the top in quarter-finals, with the Tropang GIGA having a doubling edge.
